Arbitration Workshop

The SIA Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee is pleased to announced that it will be holding a workshop on arbitration skills training as part of its continuing professional development program for its panel of architect arbitrators and those with had previously attended some arbitration training and would like to pursue a career in arbitration.

The workshop is conducted over 3 full days comprising of 6 modules covering the following areas:

• Arbitration in the context of dispute resolution
• Fundamental Principles of Arbitration
• Legal Framework and the SIA Arbitration Rules
• Arbitration Agreement under the standard SIA Building Contract and Sub-Contract
• Appointment of an Arbitrator
• Conflict of Interest & Code of Conduct
• Challenges to the Appointment of an Arbitrator
• Role, Powers, and Jurisdiction of an Arbitrator
• Arbitration Process
• Interlocutory Matters
• Factual Witness Evidence & Expert Evidence
• Oral Hearing
• Award

This will be conducted as an interactive workshop and participants are encouraged to actively participate in the discussions. As such, the workshop is intended for those who have some background knowledge on arbitration and seeking to improve their understanding and knowledge of arbitration and its practices.

This advanced-level workshop is targeted at architects who are interested in the process and procedures of arbitration. It is particularly relevant to SIA members who have passed recognised arbitrators' training courses, such as GCIA and SIArb FAC, with award-writing modules.

Members who have the above training and fulfill the relevant criteria, will be able to apply for admission to the SIA Panel of Arbitrators upon completing this workshop.
